Los Angeles Haunt Couture 2017

IIDA_2017LAHaunt_500px

This year’s Haunt Couture 2017 drew its inspiration from a century old world of movies. The theme was “ENVELOPE PLEASE: Hollywood to Bollywood” and what a show the teams put up this year! We had 14 teams participate, bringing their interpretations of 5 different genres of movies – musical, horror, sci-fi, film noir and animation. Each presentation was spectacular and mind-blowing but, as always, there can only be a few winners.

Here are the photos and video from the event.

The winners of each category were:

NICOLE: Welcome, ladies! I’m curious, how did you go about selecting your individual teams?

MAKENNA (COTC): Our professor selected the hardest working students to compete.

SHAMANE (WU): I chose team members that had creativity and motivation.

NICOLE:  Both good strategies!  What do you think will be your greatest challenge going into this year’s Haunt Couture?

SHAMANE (WU): Remembering to breathe and not freak out!

MAKENNA (COTC): Sewing the costume.

NICOLE: It can’t be easy managing the hard work of a full course load AND crafting a custom garment with a drop-dead performance to match. How do you balance it all?

MAKENNA (COTC): Our team meets every day that we aren’t in classes.

NICOLE: Yeesh.

SHAMANE (WU): Good time management and lots of spinach!

NICOLE: If you could choose ONE resource to have more of (money, fabric, time, etc.), what would it be?

SHAMANE (WU): Maybe more fabric for crafting accessories…or a professional seamstress!

MAKENNA (COTC): Money.

NICOLE: All about that cash, Makenna!  Thank you, ladies. I’ll let you get back to the dorms.

MAKENNA (COTC): But you promised us a ride.

NICOLE: Uh-huh, byeeeeeeee!

NICOLE: Welcome, ladies! As team leaders, what excited you most about this year’s theme?

JANELLE (HKS): The toxic effect of natural plants is so interesting to work with…the fact that each flower has effects ranging from mild to fatal is so intriguing!

MARLEN (WAI): The theme is organic and open to interpretation – it will be exciting to see how each team conveys the theme.

RACHEL (HOK): It’s so open ended. Anything’s possible!

NICOLE:  Without giving too much away…how are you using this year’s theme to inspire your design?

RACHEL (HOK): We are taking advantage of the healing VS. destructive aspects of our plant.

JANELLE (HKS): Our design is inspired by the movement of our flower’s toxins through the veins once ingested.

MARLEN (WAI): No comment.

NICOLE: As a returning team, what mistakes have you made in previous years that you are going to try to not replicate?

RACHEL (HOK): Not pushing enough boundaries!

JANELLE (HKS): Putting ideas before concept.

MARLEN (WAI): Although Wolcott has participated before, we are a completely new team, so…so far, so good!

NICOLE: Looking around the room, who do you think your biggest competition is this year?

RACHEL (HOK): Each team has something new to bring to the table. We are very excited about the competition this year.

JANELLE (HKS): Well, Gensler isn’t participating, so…

MARLEN (WAI): The students!

NICOLE: One last question…If you could give us a TINY hint to what your performance will be like…what would you say?

RACHEL (HOK): Things are not what they appear.

MARLEN (WAI): Intoxicating!

JANELLE (HKS): Dark and dreamy.

NICOLE: Thank you, ladies. Can’t wait to see what this year’s competition brings. Biscuit, please get off my leg.

Haunt Couture is an alchemy of design, fashion and desire. Throughout the centuries, flora and fauna have been used for healing. But there is an equal and powerful obsession with the darker side of doing harm. This year’s theme of good and evil will provide the inspiration for each team to create fashions to wow the judges and audiences alike. Bring your “A” game as competition is as fierce. You don’t want to be the next forget me not!
