Community in Action: IIDA Supports A Sense of Home’s Disaster Relief Efforts

Last Saturday, IIDA Members came together at A Sense of Home’s Disaster Relief Program to stage homes for families affected by the recent fires. As IIDA’s first official Outreach and Philanthropy Partner, A Sense of Home has become an incredibly meaningful organization for our community to support.

For those unfamiliar, A Sense of Home is a nonprofit that transforms empty living spaces into fully furnished homes for youth aging out of foster care — and, through their disaster relief initiatives, for families recovering from catastrophic loss. Their model is built on dignity, stability, and the belief that a well-designed home can change the trajectory of someone’s life.

During Saturday’s event, each family shared a short biography outlining their story, aesthetic preferences, household needs, and details like children and pets. Using this information, our members thoughtfully selected pieces from the El Monte warehouse and created complete living and dining spaces for six families. Throughout the day, we listened to their stories, learned how the fires have impacted their lives, and heard how their newly furnished homes will help them begin a new chapter. Their fight is far from over, but being able to bring light to their year of loss was truly special.

As you consider year-end giving, we encourage you to support A Sense of Home. Another impactful way to get involved is by helping set the table for a fire-displaced family, providing the essentials that make a house feel like home. Click here to see more photos of the event.
