Bentley, “Born & Raised” in L.A.

Bentley, California’s largest carpet manufacturer, was “Born & Raised” in L.A. in 1979. At the time, L.A. was in the throes of change. The culture was evolving, bringing an edge to the City of Angels. Punk rock invaded the Sunset Strip, a movement that translated to the runway with the eccentric styles of Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen. The world of commercial carpet was transforming as Bentley broke industry tradition and opened its L.A. doors, leading the push to bring fashion to the floor.

To this day, Bentley’s SoCal roots inspires everything it does: from its designs to its tufting machinery to its branding and events. Bentley has explored the city center, the outskirts and all the places in-between, including the lost and forgotten. It is constantly reinventing itself, but always using L.A. as its muse – keeping its edgy yet sophisticated vibe that’s reflected in all its broadloom and modular carpet styles.

Bentley has been bringing fashion to the floor for more than three decades (40 years in 2019!), while also leading the industry in sustainability. As a California-based company, it’s always adhered to strict manufacturing and environmental standards. In 1984, Bentley received its first sustainability award. Today, it manufactures in a LEED®-EBOM Gold-certified facility – the first in the industry – and has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy for its sustainability achievements.

Desk Talk with Hallie Putterman

Meet Hallie Putterman, she is our local sales representative for Bentley and our very own IIDA San Diego City Center Memberships Chair. She is always on the go and brings good energy to anyone!

What are your 4 ways you stay sane throughout the day?

Start my day at the gym (you can’t blow off a workout if you start your day with it)
Take my dog for a walk—I’m fortunate to be able to bring her with me (when it isn’t too hot), so if the day gets too nutty I’ll take a break to walk her.
Visit my favorite design firms and clients! Some offices really remind you how fun this job can be.
Keep snacks in the car . . . because sometimes there isn’t even a second to stop for food!

What are 3 things that have inspired you lately?
Planning a trip to Belize to visit friends who just moved there
Organizing a reunion of my teammates from the Anchorage Marathon in 1999
The color of the water on a recent trip to Antigua. I’m trying to find it in a paint color!

Where can we find you on a Saturday morning?
Riding my bike around San Diego

What are 3 things you haven’t done that you want to do?
Visit the island in Chile where my mom was born
Take my father to Italy so he can try authentic gelato
Complete an event in all 50 states (I’m up to 18, and tracking on a map with my 9-year old niece)

Beer or Wine?
Beer. Dark beer for sure!

What 3 items would you take to a desert island other than food and water?

A knife
A tent
A journal (and a pen . . . can I make that 4 items?!)

Clutch Carpet: Bentley’s Fast Track Quick-Ship

No two projects are created equal. There’s the highly anticipated retail hotspot that can’t throw open its doors fast enough, and the new corporate build that makes a snail look like an Olympic sprinter. Completion deadlines range from light years away to needed in a New York minute. Each has unique demands, and cookie cutter options simply don’t apply.

At Bentley, we get it. We understand that standard lead times don’t work for all contracts, and with Fast Track, our new quick-ship program, we’ve got you covered.

Our goal is to provide clients with a first-rate experience by delivering product where you need it, when you need it, and within budget. Fast Track is designed for maximum flexibility and expedited delivery to meet even the shortest project lead times. Think of it as your clutch carpet go-to!

Currently in the program’s arsenal is Arcade Legend. Reminiscent of the linear graphics in popular video games of the 1970s and 80s, Arcade Legend features Antron® Lumena™ solution-dyed yarn with a running line of 12 colorways. The product is available in 18”x36” and 24”x24” NexStep® Cushion Tile or AFIRMA™ Hardback Tile, complete with an Extreme TARR rating. Arcade Legend is third-party certified to the Cradle to Cradle, NSF® 140, and CRI Green Label Plus standards, as well as backed by an Environmental Product Declaration or EPD.

For Fast Track orders of 1500 yards or less, Arcade Legend will be ready to ship within 10 business days of order. For orders exceeding 1500 yards, our account executives are ready to help coordinate the spec.

Stay tuned for more Fast Track options coming soon. Three more product introductions are slated for launch within the program in first quarter 2015—including entryway tile.

California Carpet Culture

Behind our shiny Los Angeles locale, Bentley is a brand firmly rooted in our environmental California culture. We are proud to operate in a state with a strong stance on environmental stewardship, and among California’s constituents, businesses, and communities, there is an overall consensus to do the right thing for people and the planet. The state of California has the most rigorous sustainable manufacturing standards in the nation, practices we as a company whole-heartedly embrace.

Since 1994, Bentley has been measuring, evaluating, and optimizing our manufacturing process and resource metrics at our facility. The life cycle approach we take to evaluating our sustainability performance has demonstrated that 80% or more of the impacts our products have on the environmental stem from the production stage. With this insight, we focus our attention on the manufacturing processes and selection of input materials, because you can’t make green product in a brown environment. If you can make the manufacturing process cleaner and more efficient, you can make carpet green all the way around.

To put this philosophy into action, we re-certified our manufacturing plant last year to LEED® for Existing Buildings: Operations Maintenance at the Gold level. To date, Bentley’s facility is the industry’s only LEED-certified carpet manufacturing plant.

Moreover, we are looking more closely at the materials we source and utilizing components from companies that are demonstrating environmental consciousness. For example, we continue to use Antron® Lumena™ type 6,6 nylon, a certified environmentally preferable fiber. We are also pleased to have vendors like Styron who have a focus on renewable energy. Continuing to identify ways to produce product more sustainably is leading our goal products that cause zero-impact.

Our sustainability efforts also include ensuring our customers understand and feel confident about the material health of our products. We are proud to continue to offer tile and broadloom that are free of PVC and other chemicals of concern found in material red lists. This was one of the key reasons we underwent Cradle to Cradle certification in 2013. The intent of this certification, coupled with our sustainable manufacturing philosophies as a California company, lends itself to the continual optimization of the material health and reutilization of our products.

As members of a materials-intensive industry, Bentley’s goal is to ensure that each facet of the environment we touch continues to grow and thrive, while our company grows and thrives within it. To see us live in action, we invite IIDA SoCal designers to visit us in City of Industry to tour our mill.
