LACC’s First Design Tour of 2019 – Akerman LLP, Thursday, 4/30 5:30 – 8:30pm

Greetings Los Angeles Design Community! Just around the corner is IIDA, LACC’s very first design tour of 2019!! And it is going to be a great one…

Downtown Los Angeles has no shortage of office buildings. Springing up out of an underdeveloped urban center, newer high-rises have grown to dominate the landscape, offering a contrast to the uniquely Californian architecture that illustrated the city’s history in decades past. With the older buildings, local architects and designers are in the middle of creating a renaissance; pairing a century-old history with the needs of a changing contemporary culture.

This is the story at the backdrop of the law offices of Akerman LLP. Located in Bunker Hill’s CalEdison building, one would imagine that a law office beyond the warm, dark art deco lobby would include heavy wood desks, books lining the walls, private offices lining the spaces where light comes in. But gone are the days of the dark chambers of legal offices, and Wirt Design Group’s work on Akerman’s new digs showcase everything the modern law office strives to be. Exposed concrete and raw materials inspire a space that feels fresh.

A large focus on gathering and entertaining both indoors and out make Akerman a different company, and you can experience this with IIDA’s LA City Center on Tuesday, April 30 5:30PM – 8:30PM.

Our evening will take us through the social spaces of the office, touching on the design of the building and the benefits to those who occupy the space. Join us to learn more about this project. Tickets can be purchased on the event page here.

Hurry, as space is limited and tickets will sell out! See you on Tuesday, April 30th!

A Designer In Need.

This past week, Brittany Renee Smith, a designer with Klawiter and Associates, was in a bad car accident leaving a job site in the Palm Springs area. She sustained significant head injuries, and the road to recovery will be substantial. She was recently airlifted to UCLA for more focused care. Anyone who knows Brittany can speak to her positive energy, her smile, and amazing kindness. IIDA SoCal sends all best wishes to Brittany and her family for a quick recovery. The family has set up a GoFundMe page here.

Bentley, “Born & Raised” in L.A.

Bentley, California’s largest carpet manufacturer, was “Born & Raised” in L.A. in 1979. At the time, L.A. was in the throes of change. The culture was evolving, bringing an edge to the City of Angels. Punk rock invaded the Sunset Strip, a movement that translated to the runway with the eccentric styles of Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen. The world of commercial carpet was transforming as Bentley broke industry tradition and opened its L.A. doors, leading the push to bring fashion to the floor.

To this day, Bentley’s SoCal roots inspires everything it does: from its designs to its tufting machinery to its branding and events. Bentley has explored the city center, the outskirts and all the places in-between, including the lost and forgotten. It is constantly reinventing itself, but always using L.A. as its muse – keeping its edgy yet sophisticated vibe that’s reflected in all its broadloom and modular carpet styles.

Bentley has been bringing fashion to the floor for more than three decades (40 years in 2019!), while also leading the industry in sustainability. As a California-based company, it’s always adhered to strict manufacturing and environmental standards. In 1984, Bentley received its first sustainability award. Today, it manufactures in a LEED®-EBOM Gold-certified facility – the first in the industry – and has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy for its sustainability achievements.

Arper Celebrates Los Angeles Showroom Opening

Please join in celebrating the grand opening of Arper Los Angeles on September 6th at 5:30pm. Please RSVP at the following link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/new-showroom-opening-los-angeles-tickets-48845724878

Italian design brand Arper has opened its first west coast showroom in Downtown Los Angeles. Located on the plaza floor of the KPMG center, the modern showroom was designed by New York-based architect Solveig Fernlund in collaboration with Arper’s Creative Director Jeannette Altherr from Barcelona, to embody the brand’s ethos through an exploration of light, space and color – all of which represent shared values between the brand and its new location in California.

“L.A. is more closely aligned with Mediterranean culture than Arper’s other locations in New York or Chicago,” says Jeannette Altherr, Creative Director. “Both in terms of climate and vegetation, but also through the influence of Modernism, with which clean, rational lines and a mix of vibrant colors speaks to the emotions. We wanted this to come across in the showroom, which projects a tactile and happy atmosphere with a sense of optimism.”

High ceilings and large windows enlarge the 3,000 square foot space, making the showroom feel spacious and airy, while connecting it with the outdoors. Natural light flows through the space and invites visitors to experience Arper’s furniture in various settings – small and large, intimate and grand, commercial and residential.

The new space expertly showcases Arper’s modern way of bridging the gap between work and life. Arper hopes the showroom will become a trusted resource for designers in the L.A. area, creating a place where the A&D community can engage with its knowledgeable staff and experience its contemporary furnishings first-hand.
