The IIDA Outreach+Philanthropy ‘Design for Dignity’ Panel Discussion

Last week, IIDA hosted an engaging and thought-provoking Design for Dignity panel discussion, bringing together leaders from across the design and nonprofit community.

Our panel featured:

  • Rachel Stich, Executive Director, A Sense of Home
  • Sergio Lechuga, Director of Interior Design, HMC Architects
  • Chris Caron, Social Purpose Project Leader, Perkins & Will
  • Cristian Ahumada, Executive Director, Holos Communities

The conversation explored what it means to design with dignity at the forefront. Panelists spoke candidly about the creative approaches they take when budgets are limited, and the importance of designing spaces that foster safety, belonging, and pride for their communities. See more photos here!

Each panelist also shared personal experiences that illustrated the power of dignified design—from helping youth aging out of foster care establish their first real homes, to creating community spaces that serve as hubs for connection and resilience.

The key takeaway: Designing for dignity is not just about aesthetics—it is about elevating the human experience, even in the face of challenges.

We are grateful to our panelists for their insights and to our members and guests who joined us for this important conversation. Together, we continue to affirm the role design plays in shaping equitable and inclusive communities. Special thanks to our event sponsor OFS for hosting us!
